How to write a freelance proposal that answers the brief
Build a focused freelance proposal with a relevant example, clear deliverables, assumptions, milestones and a useful next question. Includes an adaptable outline.
A freelance proposal should help a client decide whether you understand the assignment and can deliver it. It does not need a long biography or a promise to do everything. Start with the specific result, explain how you would approach it and make uncertainty visible. The outline below is for a fuller proposal after you have read the brief; a first marketplace response can be much shorter.
Start with the client's outcome
Open with one or two sentences that reflect the actual task. For a landing page, that might be a responsive page built from approved designs with a working enquiry form. Do not claim you can guarantee sales, rankings or conversion improvements from a brief alone. Describe the work you can control and the result you will deliver.
Avoid pasting the same opening into unrelated projects. Refer to a concrete requirement that matters: the existing CMS, a mobile checkout problem, a delivery format or a specific integration. If the brief is ambiguous, state your interpretation as an assumption, not as a fact.
Show one relevant piece of evidence
Choose a portfolio example that demonstrates the required skill. Explain your role and what you personally delivered. If the project was collaborative, say so. Do not invent client results or share confidential files to make a pitch look stronger. If you have no comparable commercial work, label a practice project honestly and explain why its implementation is relevant.
Make the scope easy to review
- Deliverables: what the client receives, in which format and at what level of completeness.
- Approach: the main steps, including review and testing where relevant.
- Inputs: access, content, decisions or assets the client needs to supply.
- Exclusions: work not covered by this proposal.
- Changes: how additional requests will be estimated and approved.
A milestone should end in something reviewable, not merely “one week of work”. For example: confirm the page structure; review a working first version; test the agreed devices and hand over the site. Specify whether revision rounds are included and what happens after they are used.
Separate price from assumptions
State the currency, pricing basis and payment schedule you propose. Tie your estimate to the defined scope and client inputs. If you cannot yet estimate responsibly, propose a clearly bounded discovery step or ask the missing question. Avoid a low fixed quote that only works if every unresolved requirement turns out to be trivial.
An adaptable proposal outline
Outcome: I understand you need [specific result] for [audience or workflow].
Relevant work: In [example], I was responsible for [your contribution]. The relevant part is [connection to this task].
Delivery: I propose [deliverables], reviewed at [milestones]. This assumes [client inputs]. It does not include [exclusions].
Commercial terms: My estimate is [amount and currency] on a [fixed or hourly] basis, subject to the scope above. The proposed payment stages are [stages].
Next question: Can you confirm [the one unresolved detail that most affects scope or timing]?
A short first response on Vibe Work
The optional message on a native task is limited to 280 characters. Use it to signal fit and ask one useful question; keep your portfolio in your profile and save the full scope discussion for the next step. For example:
I can build the responsive landing page from your approved design. My profile includes a similar implementation. Is the copy final, and which service should receive form submissions?
Complete the required freelancer profile before responding. A response is not a contract or a guarantee of selection. If a client approves contact sharing, agree scope and payment directly. External listings follow the application process on their source site, which may have different limits and rules.
